Gleaning Program

The Gleaning Program supports Evening Meals at School, helping ensure another year of healthy affordable, local meals. Overflow fresh produce may be sent year-round to the Lopez Fresh Food Bank at the Lopez Island Family Resource Center. Call LIFRC at 360-468-4117 for details.

What is gleaning? Gleaned food is excess produce from professional farms to home gardens. Here are some ways to participate:

  • Our island has many fruit trees that produce great bounty which could be shared through Evening Meals at School. Invite some gleaners to come and help harvest!
  • The many avid island gardeners are encouraged to plant an extra row of veggies that can be stored or frozen for use in fall and winter soups such as onions, potatoes, carrots, squash, etc.
  • "Gleaned" food includes produce which would otherwise be left in the fields by farmers, because it doesn't meet the strict aesthetic requirements of retail markets.
  • Freeze excess vegetables such as zucchini and other non-storable produce.

We welcome it all. Advance notice will help us harvest at peak freshness.
